My 2022 in clothes

Inspired by @easypeasysustainability on Instagram, in 2022 I attempted to keep track of the things I bought. When it comes to shopping my focus is on buying things that I’ll get good use out of and will feel comfortable in. I like shopping in the sales because that enables me to try brands I wouldn’t be able to afford at full price. I like buying from charity shops as they always have a good selection of blouses which I love to wear.

When it comes to the way I shop, I’m generally always looking for specific things like trousers for work, a green cardigan or an oversized blouse. These things are identified when I’m putting outfits together, if I notice an item needs replacing or if I feel like I’m wearing the same thing too often. Shopping this way helps me avoid buying things I don’t need or won’t get use out of.

In 2022, I bought a total of 45 items

  • 1 Coat

  • 3 Pairs of trainers

  • 2 Pairs of sandals

  • 1 Bag

  • 4 Pairs of trousers

  • 2 Jumpers

  • 6 Shorts

  • 18 Tops

  • 2 Cardigans

  • 1 Skirt

  • 3 Dresses

  • 1 Pair of leggings

  • 1 Jacket

Places I shopped

  • Zalando

  • Charity shops

  • Net-a-Porter

  • H&M

  • Marks and Spencer

Month I shopped the most

I went on holiday to a warm country for almost 2 weeks at the end of August. I ended up buying a lot of new items because I didn’t have anything suitable for hotter weather. I ended up buying more than I needed, most of which was from H&M. August was the only time I shopped there and I found that because the clothing was so cheap it was easy for me to buy more than I needed.

Month I shopped the least

I didn’t buy anything in january. As much as it’s easy to be enticed by the sales, I hate feeling the pressure to spend money on things I didn’t already plan to buy. So, instead I bought nothing.

Item I purchased the most

I bought 18 tops in total, a mix of blouses, t-shirts and long sleeved tops. Many of these were bought for my holiday where I was sometimes wearing 2 outfits in a day and wasn’t relying on having access to a washing machine. I also mainly had thick, dark coloured tops that wouldn’t have been suitable for my holiday so 18 doesn't feel too unreasonable for me.

3 of my favourite items purchased

  • &Daughter Green cable knit wool sweater purchased in the Net-a-porter summer sale.

  • Minimum 100% Cotton cardigan in green purchased from Zalando

  • M&S Jersey Checked Tapered Trousers

Least worn

Unfortunately I have quite a few items I bought in 2022 that I didn’t wear for various reasons. Some of them were things that in hindsight I should have returned, some were brought to push the boundaries of my personal style but I just ended up reverting to what I’m comfortable in and the rest I just haven’t ended up picking when I’m putting outfits together.

Plans for 2023

This year, I want to buy much less clothing than I did in 2022. I want to get more use out of the items I already own and get rid of items I no longer wear. I want to shop I want all my purchases to be items that I make use of and feel good wearing.

Lastly I want to focus more on assessing the material composition and quality of the things I buy rather than just how they look
